G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

I splurged this weekend and saw G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra, I will not lie to you, I had very little expectations for this movie, I only went for want of something to do. So with low expectations well in hand I sat down to begin the 90 plus minutes of endless CGI and possible robotics. The movie in that respect did not disappoint. Movie begins with boy chasing girl screaming for her to stop and half the people getting shot down and then a bunch of weird looking men in blacks show up and they carry off some weapon thingy to a secret base.

Enter the Joes.

The story wasn’t as empty has I had expected, though the mysterious lady, played by Sienna Miller, lost a fair amount of her mystery in about 10mins flat. The basic gist of the story is there are these nuclear warheads that has to be recovered or the world goes to pot, a bunch of secret military dudes known as the Joes must get this warheads from the bad guys, our “hero” the ruggedly delectable Channing Tatum and his friend and comrade one of the Wayans’ (I think it’s Marlon) are first assigned to guard said warhead until they are ambushed and saved by the Joes. Tatum and the Wayans join up so they can secure the warheads and because they have a special relationship with the mysterious lady in black.

Filmicly the movie plays well with a clever action sequences that barely leaves you with a moment of breath. The cast is well meshed with seasoned actors such as Dennis Quaid and Jonathan Pryce and talented fresh faces like Rachel Nichols and Byung-hun Lee. As a cast they work well together and Stephen Sommers is well placed directing this genre. You can tell you directed the movie by the cast, such as Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Arnold Vosloo and even Brendan Fraser makes an appearance. The story, though wasn’t empty, was a tad predictable and the conclusions could be guessed. However a one of the villainous twists was rather impressive but I am not going to give it away. The dialogue wasn’t too fabulous and in some moments you feel like you’re in a video game which could be good or bad depending on who you are.

If you enjoyed Transformers you will enjoy this, Tatum is worth the watch if just for the battle scars.

Back to Reality... sort of...

Thursday, August 13, 2009

I have been away from the blogosphere for a while, rather shocking for someone who has just completed her masters on said sphere. Well my absence was not entirely due to lax but I have had some bad news the last few weeks hence other things occupied my mind the last few weeks.

So an update as to where I am at, at present time. So masters is done and a void has opened up, yes I am crazy and possible need to have my head examined but that void must be filled and soon! I have decided to do my PhD in film, I shall be researching the Nigerian cinema (Nollywood) and some technological issues. Just applied for some NRF funding for it so lets hope I get some. I am actually very excited about the project, I hope to make a doccie which will be hard but lots of fun not mention rewardingly rich in content, I hope. Aside from that, I am pretty goodish, trying to write up a storm while taking it one day at a time...
